Chinese newspapers on Friday announced that the wife of ousted
politician Bo Xilai has been charged with the murder of a British
businessman, a messy political scandal that has unsettled China's
leadership ahead of a delicate power transition.
Gu Kailai is alleged to have poisoned Neil Heywood over a money issue that made her worried about her and her son's safety.
Some in Beijing welcomed the indictment announcement, saying it gave them faith in the legal system.
The case exposed the intense infighting that the secretive leadership prefers to hide and affirmed an already sceptical public's dim view about corrupt dealings in the party.
Now according to Gu's lawyer, the trial should start on August 7, not earlier than ten days after the prosecution's indictment, and she could be facing life sentence.
